Be Wise When Choosing Individual Health Insurance

Purchasing an individual health insurance policy or a family health insurance can be confusing and sometimes overwhelming. You are faced with many decisions from the type of plan to the complex terms and benefit coverage. If you do not understand everything or don’t ask questions then you could end paying costly premiums for your individual health insurance policy with fewer benefits than you want.

Here are some tips that will help you find the best family, or individual health insurance plan. These ideas should make it easier for you to understand the terms, conditions and benefits that are a standard part of most health insurance plans. You can even save money once you discover how easy it is to trim monthly costs of a policy by adjusting deductible amounts; selecting only the necessary coverage and benefits; and eliminating unnecessary options.

Before finalizing anything on your new health insurance policy, make sure that the new plan will let you keep seeing the doctor you already use. This will depend on the type of plan you choose, if it is an HMO or PPO insurance plan.

If you prefer to keep the same doctor then you probably want to go with a PPO plan. A PPO insurance plan will allow you to have freedom in choosing the doctor you want.

HMO health insurance policies are structured quite differently. These plans are linked only to an approved network of doctors that have agreed to accept the benefits the HMO is willing to pay. Your individual health insurance benefits are payable only when you use one of the physicians in the insurance company’s HMO network.

Make sure that you understand the payments. You should find out how much each payment is and how it is to be paid. Some companies will want you to have payments deducted from a bank account. You may also find some companies will do monthly payments while others will have a different payment schedule set up.

Weigh the practicality of selecting a low cost, individual health insurance policy that covers only catastrophic illnesses. Some of these plans have a monthly premium of less than $50.

You should also look at medication or prescription coverage. This type of coverage is usually optional and if you get regular medications then you might want to add this to your policy. Make sure that the medications you use are covered, though. The cost will then be part of your insurance coverage.

Find out how much money you are responsible for paying in the event that you have to make a trip to the hospital for urgent, emergency care. Some people are shocked to discover that they must pay several hundred dollars for one of these ER visits even though they have health insurance. You should also ask the insurance agent what types of treatment are classified as “emergency care” according to the terms in the insurance policy.

Get a detailed list of co-pays and other charges that you will have to pay on your individual health insurance plan that are charges you pay that are applied to the deductible. You will need to keep track of how much your out of pocket expenses are so you can apply them to the deductible.

You can customize any family or individual health insurance plan to meet your budget needs. For people in their 20s or early 30s a plan with a high deductible and lower benefits could save you a lot of money. Remember that lower deductibles can lower your monthly premiums by quite a bit.

Do not worry about asking questions when you are trying to shop for family or individual health insurance plans. Some people just go along with whatever the company suggest without even understanding anything that they are getting. The more you know about your insurance coverage, the better chance you have of getting the best deal.
