The demand for ethical clothing and other goods is swarming with every passing day, and now, a considerable number of retailers and manufacturers are looking for ethically bound suppliers for different products, and they also have sketched their ethical sourcing policy for this purpose.
Ethical sourcing policy makes sure that the products or goods are not made by forced, prison, or bonded labours. Child labour, i.e. younger than 16years, is also not acceptable by them. Sourcing policy also includes that proper wages are paid to the worker, which are according to the set industry standards of the country in which, the outsourcing must be done, and there should be fair wages according to the work they have done.
Furthermore, the suppliers cannot deduct the wages on other measure like disciplinary measures. The suppliers cannot take work of more than 48hours a week, and if in case they do, then overtime wages must be paid to the labourers.
Ethical sourcing policy may also include that the labours should not be discriminated while hiring based on colour, gender, religion, age, or national origin. The working conditions of the labourers should be protected, and good enough, some may include safety, and health training to their workers in their ethical sourcing policy.
A quick shift can be noticed in attitude of the consumers towards ethically sourced goods; in many countries of the world including the UK, shoppers are demanding for ethically sourced goods despite the worldwide economic downturn. Considering this change in attitude of the consumers, a large number of retailers and brands have forced to make it certain that they are providing their consumers ethically sourced goods.
The retailers and the brands, in spite of global recession are moving towards the more expensive items, but those are acceptable by the consumers, as they are in line with the ethical sourcing policy. The brands have to work together with the suppliers to satisfy their customers, as the suppliers are directly dealing with the under privileged labourers.
Consumers demand their retailers for ethically sourced goods, which have now been supported by different governments, and organisations working with an agenda to improve the working conditions of the poor. It happened some years ago, that some footage was shot, and aired on media, and serious campaign started against the suppliers from the third world countries.
When consumers got awareness through media, they stopped buying the goods of those companies, which made the brands chalk out their new ethical sourcing policy. As the attitude around the globe is changing, more and more brands and retailers are moving towards the ethical sourcing policy.
