Effectively Recognizing ADHD

by Guest Author on November 18, 2009

Effectively recognizing ADHD is necessary whenever parents or others notice that children may be behaving in a less-focused manner and/or seem to be exhibiting high level some of energy that cannot be directed in generally useful directions when needed. Every child, it should be noted, can exhibit an excess of energy and lack of focus, but there is a difference when it comes to ADHD.

Generally speaking, ADHD — which stands for attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder — is a general name given to a broad range of exhibited behaviors found in children and adults. In particular, kids who may be suffering from ADHD will exhibit a less-than-normal attention span more often than would be expected and may be more impulsive than is the norm in children at any age.

As a group, the symptoms that most children will display when affected by ADHD help to cause children to be less able to maintain normal relationships and also tend to cause children to have problems with learning effectively. It is not the child’s fault, but he or she might be considered by adults to be more difficult to supervise the many different stages in the child’s life.

Today, physicians and other medical professionals believe that up to 12% of all school-age children are affected by ADHD. Boys tend to suffer from it more than girls, also. In’94, the American Psychiatric Association renamed the set of behaviors known as attention deficit disorder (ADD) to the newer ADHD in recognition of the symptoms (including hyperactivity) that tended to show themselves.

Anyone who suspects that their child might be affected by ADHD can expect to find several or more symptoms. Usually, the child may not be able to follow instructions in a consistent manner and will also have problems devoting his or her attention on play or work taking place. In conjunction with that problem of attention span, the child might consistently lose objects needed for work or play.

Anyone with responsibility for raising or supervising children who could be suffering from ADHD has to be where of the need to avoid frustration, especially as children with it might come across as unwilling to listen to construction or might seem to be disinterested in what is being said. They can be disorganized and unable to plan correctly while seeming forgetful, also.

For children who also have hyperactivity, look for signs such as impulsiveness and being constantly fidgety. They also will seem to be extremely energetic, which manifests itself in inappropriate running and climbing. They also will not be able to quietly play, will blurt out answers to questions and will interrupt others. They are also extremely talkative.

Medical professionals say that those children who display six or more symptoms are probably being affected by ADHD. Children who are suspected of having the disorder should be seen by a doctor for a workup and evaluation. ADHD (in children) can be addressed through medications and therapies and children can be taught to become self-aware and work to control their disorder, also.
