How to Look After Your Natural Hair Extensions-Secrets Revealed

by Guest Author on November 19, 2009

Real hair extensions are more costly than synthetic ones but they do give a much more natural look of course. Properly chosen natural hair extensions will blend in with your own hair and become undetectable.

Without proper maintenance however, your hair extensions may not last as long as they should, and you will be returning to the salon sooner than you need. The following are some of the care facts that your hair stylist might not have told you:

Natural hair extensions do not have the advantage of being supplied with the natural oils from the scalp like your own hair, and are therefore more vulnerable to drying out and becoming frizzy. You should therefore, remember, when shampooing to rinse thoroughly and then apply some conditioner, preferably extra-moisturizing formula. Apply this as a thin layer along the length of your own hair plus the extensions and leave for a few minutes. Then rinse off.

Sometimes bacteria can congregate under the extensions so you need to shampoo and condition your hair and the attached extensions every two days or so. Remember that the extensions can tangle easily and could become detached if handled too roughly.

Knots and tangles are more easily dealt with when the hair is wet, so after showering you should use a wide-tube comb to gently disentangle and comb through the hair. If the knots are more stubborn you may need to use more detangling spray and an even wider-tooth comb.

Remember that heated tools, such as straightening irons or curlers, if over used can damage your own hair, so you need to be especially careful with hair extensions where the hair is more easily damaged. You should not use these implements every day for fear of reducing the lifespan of the extensions.

You will need to have the extensions tightened as your natural hair grows and they become gradually looser. On average you should have this done every 8-12 weeks, depending on how quickly your hair grows.. Don’t leave it too long though otherwise you may run into problems.

Your hairdresser might suggest you replace your extensions after 6 months or so , but, with proper care they can last much longer than that, maybe as much as two years, so don’t be persuaded to replace them unnecessarily. If you care for your extensions taking heed of the advice given here you will find they are a lasting asset to your appearance.
