Thinning Hiar Products – What Are The Options

by Guest Author on November 14, 2009

Just Minoxidil and Finasteride are accepted by the FDA as treatments for thinning hair. They both work slightly differently with Finasteride being available to men only and Minoxidil being safe to use for both men and women. How much hair they thicken and to what degree varies on an individual basis.

There is however a vast array of products that will cosmetically thicken thinning hair and add body and thickness to hair. These can make a dramatic difference to one’s appearance.

There are some conditioners and shampoos that are formulated to thicken thinning hair by adding extra body and density to individual hairs. This is done by using a hair thickening agent that attaches itself to the hairs from the root to the tip. In addition to shampoos and conditioners there are mousses and spray products that also create more thickness by adding volume. The ingredients of these and anything that promises thicker hair should be noted and taken into account by the user to make sure that they are safe and won’t damage hair. Blow drying is not recommended for those with thinning hair as it can potentially damage hair and cause even more thinning.

The right type of hairstyle and hair cut should not be underestimated in the perceived volume it can create. Generally, shorter hair looks as though it has more volume and takes the focus away from the person’s face to their actual features. A short crop cut for men can make thinning hair look thicker and a bobby type cut will do the same for women. It is worthwhile discussing what hair cut is best for you with your hairdresser or hairstylist.

Hair extensions are not recommended as a means to thicken thinning hair as they can add weight and damage an already weakened hair follicle and lead to further stress and damage.

To get immediate thickening, cosmetically, hair thickening sprays, fibers and lotions might be the answer for some. These are are cosmetic in nature and are basically make ups and won’t actually biologically thicken hair but can cosmetically make it appear much thicker and fuller with more density. Certain lotions and sprays attempt to minimize the difference between the scalp and hair color so that the scalp is less visible. For example if one has thinning black hair and a light scalp a darker lotion might be applied to the hair so that the scalp color is less visible. Other sprays and fibers attempt to thicken hair in a similar fashion to mascara thickening eye lashes. Some products are very effective and make the hair seem thicker even close up.

Of course, one should make sure that the ingredients contained in these products are safe for that person. Finally, hair systems and wigs might be something that some people would benefit from. The best ones can also produce excellent results.
