There is no mysticism or rituals involved in hypnosis. It is a very simple technique, which can be understood without much difficulty with the help of psychology and other scientific procedures. People refuse to believe in hypnosis even after watching participants successfully undergoing it in public shows. They argue that those who can be hypnotized are somehow weak mentally. But this again is a complete fallacy. Hypnosis can be done on anyone irrespective of his or her levels of will power.
Another myth is that hypnosis is an alternate state of consciousness, which again is a serious misconception. A person under hypnosis does not get segregated from the external world, but stays completely conscious of the happenings around him. Hypnosis actually brings forth a state of complete relaxation characterized by a growth in levels of concentration, and this intensified awareness helps the subject to absorb new inputs without difficulty.
Some scientific discoveries have claimed that only about 5% of the population is capable of being hypnotized, which is the third myth on this list. Researchers have come up with this low percentage because they have used the identical hypnosis technique on all subjects without considering their individual traits. One hypnosis procedure for all is not a workable answer as different people come under different character types, and hence respond to different methods.
People also tend to equate hypnosis with meditation. However, communication between the subject and the practitioner is indispensable in hypnosis, while meditation is like an appointment with the self without any external interaction involved. Trance too has no connection with hypnosis at all. Just like meditation, trance is a mental state, and it is not linked with communication in any manner, on the other hand the very crux of the hypnosis method is communication.
A sizeable number of people believe that it is not possible to bring about changes in one’s appearance and conduct through hypnosis training or hypnotherapy. Hypnosis obviously cannot achieve something that is abnormal to the body. However, it can propel the body to a better shape through behavioural transformations like eating less, and giving up smoking and other addictive habits by ensuring a high level of inspiration in a person.
Hypnosis, and particularly hypnotherapy, can have a significant role to play in the well-being of a person, and not trying them out just because of some false notions is an act of folly.
